Hot Take

Finally something better than ZIP

★★★★★ 5.0verified-purchase·Review by Tom W.·2026-06-20

I archive a lot of VM images for work and the deduplication in DodaZIP is insane. We had a folder of 20 similar VM snapshots taking up about 400GB. DodaZIP compressed it down to 45GB because it found all the duplicate blocks across files. 7-Zip could only get it to 280GB. The Reed-Solomon ECC is also great for long-term archiving — I dont have to worry about bit rot on my backup drives anymore. Written in Rust too so no memory bugs. Highly recommend.

The encryption is a game changer

★★★★½ 4.7verified-purchase·Review by Anika P.·2026-06-05

Been looking for a compression tool that handles encryption properly. DodaZIP uses XChaCha20-Poly1305 with Argon2id key derivation — thats what all the security people recommend now. No more messing around with AES ZIP passwords that are probably weak. The GUI is actually nice too, works on Linux, Windows and Mac. Supports 14 formats which is handy. My only minor gripe is the CLI syntax takes a bit of getting used to if youre coming from tar.

Insightful

Good but overkill for everyday use

★★★★★ 5.0verified-purchase·Review by Dave S.·2026-05-15

DodaZIP is brilliant for what it does but honestly for zipping a few documents you dont need it. Regular ZIP is fine. Where this shines is big projects — code repos, photo libraries, backup archives. The dedup is seriously impressive. I compressed a 50GB photo collection down to 30GB by removing duplicate blocks (I had a lot of similar RAW files). The self-healing feature is also cool — I corrupted a test archive on purpose and it actually repaired itself. Would definitly recommend for serious archiving needs.

Finally a Rust archiver worth using

★★★☆☆ 3.4verified-purchase·Review by Raj H.·2026-04-28

As a Rust dev myself Ive been waiting for a proper compression tool in Rust. DodaZIP doesnt dissapoint. The memory safety argument is real — Ive had 7-Zip crash on large archives before, DodaZIP handles everything I throw at it. The random-access extraction is a big deal too. With tar.gz you have to decompress the whole thing just to get one file. DodaZIP can pull individual files out instantly. O(1) chunk table lookup. Very cool.

Format support is excellent

★★★★★ 5.0·Review by Maria G.·2026-03-10

I work with people who send archives in every format imaginable — zip, rar, 7z, tar, gz, bz2, xz, zstd — DodaZIP handles all of them in one app. No more installing multiple tools. The cross-platform GUI is actually consistent too, looks the same on my Linux desktop and my Windows laptop. The reason i give 4 instead of 5 is the compression speed could be better on the highest settings. Zstd is fast but the dedup pass adds time.

Made me delete 7-Zip

★★★★★ 5.0verified-purchase·Review by Leo F.·2026-02-22

I was a die-hard 7-Zip user for like 15 years. Tried DodaZIP on a whim and honestly I cant go back. The combination of dedup + modern codecs (Zstd is so much better than LZMA2 for most things) means my archives are smaller and faster to create. The encryption is also properly modern — no outdated AES-256 ZIP nonsense. And it being open source (MIT/Apache 2.0) means I can trust what its doing. Big fan.
